'Black Mirror' Season 8: What we know so far

Filming is officially underway for the eighth season of Black Mirror, the popular dystopian anthology series on Netflix.

This new season comes about a year and a half after the release of season seven, which received strong critical attention and included the show's first-ever direct sequel episode.

For the next season, creator Charlie Brooker will return as the show's main writer and executive producer, joined by several other returning producers. 

Plot details for the upcoming installment are being kept private, and no release date has been announced yet.

Before Variety confirmed the news, Brooker spoke of the show's return in an interview earlier this year, hinting that new ideas are already taking shape. "Hopefully it'll be more Black Mirror than ever."

He compared the creative process of building a new season to putting together a music album. "It's a useful thought experiment when approaching a new story," he told Netflix's Tudum blog.

"I'll often think of, 'Well, what haven't we done yet, and what tone am I looking for?… Where does this track come on the album, and what musical direction are we going to go into?' We'll find out. Very unlikely you'll ever see a Black Mirror hoedown."

Filming has reportedly taken place in Devon, England, where a location was transformed for use in the upcoming season.

All previous seasons of Black Mirror are currently available to stream on Netflix.
