Guyana ferry sinks with 179 onboard as search continues for missing passengers

At least 41 bodies have been recovered after a passenger ferry carrying 179 people capsized off the coast of Guyana, as search teams continue to look for dozens of missing passengers.

The MV Barima overturned late on Saturday while travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, according to Guyanese authorities.

Officials said 77 people have been rescued, leaving 61 still unaccounted for. Public Works Minister Juan Edghill said rescue efforts remain ongoing.

“To the families that are out there wondering about their loved ones, we are doing everything that is humanly possible to find them.”

Authorities said the number of passengers was initially underestimated because of inaccuracies in the ferry's manifest.

After reviewing boarding footage, officials determined the vessel was carrying 179 people.

Edghill also confirmed that the captain and other crew members are in police custody. He later said the captain and at least one crew member had tested positive for marijuana.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips said an investigation had been launched into possible wrongdoing involving members of the police, defence force and maritime administration.

“Let me be absolutely clear: where negligence, misconduct or criminal wrongdoing is established, those responsible will face the full force of the law.”

The search area has been expanded as divers continue to search the submerged ferry.
