Jeff Bezos says Moon colonies could save Earth — Here's why

Blue Origin’s founder Jeff Bezos has explained a vision to save Earth and moon holds a key to pursue this ambition.

Speaking at the VivaTech conference in Paris, the founder of Amazon said all polluting industries should be transferred to the Moon to save Earth which is already facing a plethora of crises amplified by climate change.

Bezos considers the Moon a “gift” that could not only save our planet but also accelerate space economic growth.

"Our long term vision, our dream, is that all the polluting industries can be done off-Earth if space travel gets reliable enough and inexpensive enough, and we can get materials from asteroids and near-Earth objects and the Moon." the tech boss said.

"This garden planet can be returned to its pre-industrial revolution state. This is the only way in which the world is worse today than it was 500 years ago."

According to the multibillionaire, the world is witnessing everything better today, like global illiteracy is way better than it was five centuries ago. Global poverty is improving and everything keeps getting better, except one thing, the Earth itself. And this is the way to protect it.

While the colonisation of the Moon has long been a central goal for Jeff Bezos's space firm, Blue Origin, this marks the first time he has publicly discussed the prospect of industrialising our celestial neighbour on such a massive scale.

Earlier this year, Blue Origin also unveiled a plan to deploy data centers in space by submitting a formal proposal to US regulators. As per this proposal, the company would build a network of more than 50,000 satellites to support AI workloads.

On the other hand, Blue Origin also secured a multi-billion dollar contract with NASA to develop the landing rockets for the Artemis moon mission, helping to deliver a pair of rovers to the Moon in order to support future astronauts on the lunar surface.
