Shania Twain explains why she doesn't consider herself a feminist
Shania Twain on why she avoids the feminist label
Shania Twain has said she does not consider herself a feminist, although she agrees with many of the movement's values.
The 60-year-old singer spoke on the topic in a recent interview, where she explained that she sees herself as an independent person rather than someone defined by her gender.
"I don't see myself as a feminist," she told The Sunday Times. "I see myself as a very independent thinker".
Twain said she is often described as a feminist because she strongly supports and defends women, especially those who are vulnerable. However, she reiterated her preference for being seen as a strong and independent person.
Twain also spoke about the challenges faced by men, saying that vulnerable men deserve the same support and protection as vulnerable women.
"It’s not fair. Vulnerable men need just as much protection as vulnerable women," she remarked.
The singer added that she has never fully embraced the label "feminist" because she feels the term has become surrounded by misunderstanding and negativity, despite sharing many of its principles.
Elsewhere in the interview, Twain opened up about her struggles with body image during menopause.
"In menopause you lose control of your body. So all of a sudden I’m bloating and I’m definitely not in control. I can’t just lose five pounds. I stopped looking at myself in the mirror. I hated my body. I’m like, 'Oh, I cannot stand this changing body.' But that was so unhealthy. Who cannot look at themselves in the mirror?"
She continued, "Now I’m like, 'Bring on the mirrors, I’m going to look at myself all day long!' Menopause has been very good for me because I’ve learnt that some things you cannot control".
