A video of the oldest living British royal has gone viral after he was seen pulling out his mobile phone on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, surprised royal fans as he started to record footage of both the RAF flypast and the thousands of spectators gathered to celebrate Trooping the Colour, the official birthday of King Charles III.

GB News reported that no member of the royal family has previously been seen using a phone during a public appearance on the famous balcony, making this moment entirely unprecedented in royal history.

The Duke of Kent's wife, Katharine the Duchess of Kent,  died at the age of 92. She was the oldest living member of the royal family at the time of her death.

In a move that reflected her modest nature, the Duchess dropped her HRH title later in life, preferring to be known simply as Mrs. Kent.

She stepped away from royal duties and quietly dedicated more than a decade to teaching music at a primary school in Hull.
