'Doctor Who' Christmas special cancelled amid major behind-the-scenes shake-up
Creative figures and production partners step away from the planned show, leaving to cancellation
The BBC has cancelled the planned 2026 Christmas special of Doctor Who after a major behind-the-scenes shake-up, with showrunner Russell T Davies and production company Bad Wolf being the next ones to step away from the long-running sci-fi series.
The corporation said the decision was made after “careful consideration” and warned that fans would likely be disappointed.
"After careful consideration, the BBC, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf have collectively decided not to go ahead with the previously announced Doctor Who Christmas episode," the corporation said in an official statement.
Instead of a Christmas special, the BBC wants to focus on the future of the show. It wants to rebuild how the show is made and plan long-term.
"This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory."
The BBC also said the show will now be put out to new bids. This means a new team may take over the series.
The spokesperson continued, "As part of securing the next phase of the show for future generations, and in line with the BBC’s Charter and Agreement requirements, the BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year."
The cancelled episode was meant to help keep the show going during a time of change. But now the BBC says it is no longer needed.
Davies later confirmed his departure in an Instagram post, saying there would no longer be a Christmas special because it had originally been planned to “guarantee a future” for the series during a period of uncertainty. He also said no script was finished and no actors were chosen.
Despite the cancellation, other Doctor Who projects are still being made, including a new animated series for children.
The change comes after the end of a big streaming deal that helped the show reach viewers outside the UK.
