Election results: Karen Bass advances to November LA mayoral runoff in bid for second term
Karen Bass advanced despite her 56% unfavourable rating showed by recent Los Angeles Times poll
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has secured a spot in the November runoff election in a bid for second term.
As reported by NBC, no other candidate received over 50 percent of the vote in the all-party primary, the race will go according to one-on-one contest.
Despite her advancing to November LA mayoral runoff in bid for second term, it is not clear yet whom she will compete against. The top candidates running for the second spot include Spencer Pratt who is a Republican and former reality star, running on an insurgent platform focused on the city’s response to last year’s wildfires and homelessness crisis.
Another top candidate is Nithya Raman who is a democratic City Council member running to the left of Bass. Her main agenda focuses on affordable housing and streamlined industry regulations.
Talking to reporters, Bass expressed her emotions, “I appreciate you for standing with me when others doubted me, because you know who I am. “I have devoted my entire life to serving the city that I love, where I was born, and I’m going to continue to do that all the way to victory in November.”
Bass was elected in 2022, but she faced significant public dissatisfaction because of various issues. For instance, Pratt accused her of letting fires get out of control and filing to act on the homeless crisis.
Last year’s wildfires in LA destroyed over 16,000 structures and exposed critical infrastructure failures.
In the face of criticism, Bass defended her progress, citing a 17.5 percent drop in the street homeless for two consecutive years and the homicide rate has plunged to a 60-year low.
