US-Iran talks reportedly resume as Trump says deal could be reached within a week
Trump also signalled that diplomacy remained active, saying discussions were continuing at a 'rapid pace'
Talks between the United States and Iran appear to be back on track after conflicting reports emerged about the status of negotiations amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
A source familiar with the discussions told CNN that US-Iran talks were continuing despite earlier reports from Iran's state media suggesting negotiations had been suspended following Israeli attacks in Lebanon.
US President Donald Trump also signalled that diplomacy remained active, telling ABC News that discussions were continuing at a “rapid pace”.
Speaking to ABC's Jonathan Karl on Monday, Trump said he believed an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and extend the ceasefire with Iran could be reached "over the next week".
While expressing optimism, Trump noted that some issues still needed to be resolved before any agreement could be finalised.
“I still have to get a few more points” in order to approve a deal, he said.
Trump also referred to developments involving Israel and Lebanon, saying: “There was a little glitch today, but I turned that one around very quickly, as you probably noticed earlier.”
Earlier on Monday, Trump said he had persuaded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to carry out “a major raid of Beirut, Lebanon.”
The US president suggested a diplomatic breakthrough could ultimately prove more significant than a military victory, while acknowledging that “it’s not a simple thing.”
“But we’re getting what we need to get,” Trump added.
