Michelle Obama talks about daughter Malia's work ethics: 'She doesn't want us around her stuff'
Michelle Obama says her eldest daughter Malia Obama prefers working without famous parents nearby
Michelle Obama says her daughter Malia Obama is building her filmmaking career without involvement from her famous parents.
Malia, 27, has been working in the entertainment industry in recent years. She previously worked as a writer on the TV series Swarm and later directed her short film The Heart. She also professionally uses the name Malia Ann.
Speaking on her podcast IMO with her brother Craig Robinson, Michelle joked that Malia will "never invite us to anything that she does".
“She doesn’t want us around her stuff,” Michelle said during a conversation with Steven Spielberg.
Spielberg mentioned that former US president Barack Obama had recently visited the set of his new film Disclosure Day, the first set Barack ever visited that involved his daughter.
"Even though your daughter is a filmmaker, Malia. So I feel bad I scooped Malia," Spielberg told Michelle.
In response, Michelle said, "She doesn't care. She will never invite us to anything that she does. You know, she doesn't want us around her stuff," Michelle then confessed.
Michelle also shared playful details about Barack’s friendship with Spielberg. "My husband is a bully to you when it comes to your movies," adding, "I always reprimand him … because you haven't let him see [your latest film] and he's very mad about that."
Spielberg then said Barack jokingly threatened to watch the film on a phone held vertically if he was not invited to an early screening.
"Yeah, he said if he wasn't among the first to see it, he was going to watch it only on an iPhone," Steven then shared, with Michelle adding: "Which he knows would irritate you," as Steven also quipped: "And he said he wouldn't watch it horizontally, he'd only watch it vertically."
The director also recalled how his cast reacted when Barack visited the set, saying many actors became completely silent when the former president arrived.
Disclosure Day, which releases on June 12, stars Emily Blunt, Colin Firth and Colman Domingo.
