Gayle King shares emotional update after ex-husband apologizes for cheating decades later: 'Surprised'
The journalist was married to William Bumpus for 11 years and welcomed two kids
Gayle King is revealing that she is at a "really great place" after her ex-husband apologized for cheating on her almost 40 years ago.
Following the 71-year-old news anchor's remarks about her ex-husband William Bumpus cheating with her friend on Gayle during their 11-year marriage, he issued his "deepest" apology in a statement to TMZ to Gayle, to their daughter Kirby and her husband, Virgil, to their son William and his wife, Elise, and to their three grandchildren for the pain he caused decades ago.
Now, Gayle is articulating her thoughts on William's apology, noting she was "surprised" by his response.
The TV personality told the outlet on Thursday, “I did not know he was going to do it, When I got up this morning and read it, I was very, very surprised. He didn’t say anything to me about it, but I’m very appreciative.”
Gayle also said it was unexpected for William to give a public apology, as he is a private person.
She said, “he was even talking because he never talks. So I was surprised, but I can also say I appreciated what he had to say. That was a very painful time.”
The journalist continued, “Anyone who has been through it knows how painful it is but I also know that you can go through it and get through it on the other side. This happened so long ago that we have both healed and we’ve both moved on.
She added, "And the reason why I can talk about it so candidly is because it has been so much time that has passed. I’m in a really great place and so is he.”
It is pertinent to mention that Gayle King and William Bumpus were married from 1982 to 1993.
