Martin Short recently reminisced about his former girlfriend, Gilda Radner, whom he met in a 1972 Toronto production of Godspell alongside Andrea Martin and Eugene Levy.

On Thursday, May 7, Short attended the Netflix Is a Joke Presents: This Better Be Funny with David Letterman event, where he opened up about his meeting with Radner in Godspell.

While conversing with Paul Shaffer and David Letterman at the event, the acclaimed Canadian comedian and actor said, “Godspell had opened off-Broadway and become a huge hit, so they were mounting a Toronto production. I was still in university. Gilda Radner was there. Eugene Levy. Andrea Martin. Victor Garber.”

He stated that the "callbacks were chaos — like American Idol. Hundreds of people, and somehow we all got cast together.”

The Only Murders in the Building star was asked to shed light on his relationship with Radner. He quipped that she was “exactly as wonderful as you’d hope.”

Short explained, “Every woman wanted to be her best friend and every guy wanted to date her because she was just hilarious and alive and warm.”

“The first rehearsal, she came over and said, ‘Hi, I’m Gilda. I’m really excited to meet you.’ She was instantly funny,” he recollected.

For those unaware, Martin Short met his now-deceased wife Nancy Dolman during the same production, whom he married in 1980, welcomed three children, Katherine, Oliver and Henry, and remained married until she died in 2010 due to ovarian cancer.

It is pertinent to mention that Gilda Radner also passed away due to ovarian cancer at the age of 42 on May 20, 1989.
