Instagram deletes millions of followers in massive overnight purge
Meta's aggressive purge of fake accounts, bots, and inactive profiles hits celebrities hardest
Kylie Jenner woke to 15 million missing followers. So did BLACKPINK with loosing 10 million gone), Cristiano Ronaldo with 8 million, and thousands of other creators across Instagram on Thursday. Meta’s sudden sweep of bots, dormant accounts, and paid followers brought to light an exaggerated ten years of influencer metrics.
Instagram stripped away the false facade of followers that creators, businesses, and fans had depended on as a measure of cultural significance within just six hours.
High-profile accounts suffered the greatest blow due to the disproportionate number of bots that infiltrated the accounts to make them look more influential than they were.
Small to mid-level accounts saw reductions between 2 and 5%, whereas mega-accounts saw losses amounting to millions. The company claimed this was due to “coordinated inauthentic behaviours" and pointed to a new AI-based detection system.
The company revealed very little information beyond this fact, but it mentioned that accounts considered “active” were exempt from the purge and did not lose any followers.
Artificial followers can inflate the perception of an influencer’s reach, leading to higher rates for their services. A famous celebrity who has 15 million followers can command top dollar for endorsements; once their followers are stripped away, things can look very different.
Influencers were suddenly forced to evaluate their fees in light of the purge of fake accounts.
