Zohran Mamdani, the mayor of New York, recently called King Charles, who was in the U.S. for a high-stakes visit, to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond to India.

"I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond," he said in a recent speech.

This has sparked much discussion in online spaces, with arguments over the complex history of a 105.6-carat diamond.

However, Michael Che, a Saturday Night Live comic, had prepared a punchline about the situation in his Weekend Update video.

Referring to Charles, the comedian quipped, “I’m surprised he didn’t take Mamdani back to England with him, because he is an Indian treasure.”

Following Che's dig, his co-host Colin Jost dialed up the savage attack.

He said Charles’ visit was a subterfuge to “seek the release of a British hostage being held by an American terrorist” – an oblique reference to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The skit comes days after Charles and Queen Camilla ended their four-day U.S. tour, marking America's 250th anniversary.

The trip was billed as key to easing the friction between the U.S. and the U.K. governments over a number of issues.

A royal aide, weighing in on the importance of the tour, told the BBC, "It's not a competition between the King and the government.

"The King is there to support the government, to help the government. It was at the government's request, of course, that he undertook this visit," the official concluded.
