Barbie Ferreira reflects on early pressure to champion body positivity
Barbie Ferreira shared what activism really means to her
Barbie Ferreira is reflecting on how her early modeling career unexpectedly pushed her into the spotlight as a body-positivity advocate.
In a new interview with Bustle, the actress shared that conversations around activism began long before she fully understood what the term meant.
“Back then, I spoke a lot about body positivity because I had to,” Ferreira began.
She explained that public reaction to her work often framed her as an activist, even when she was still finding her footing.
“People asked me about my activism when I was just a kid. I didn’t even know what activism meant. I’d put on a bikini for a campaign, everyone would get mad, and suddenly I was an activist.”
Looking back, Ferreira admitted that she went along with the label at the time.
“I’m 17 years old thinking, ‘Sure, I’ll be an activist if that’s what you want.’ But I don’t think that’s what true activism is.”
Instead, she expressed that she now views activism as something far more intentional.
“Real activism is dedicating your life to a cause. I just believe people should be reflected in the media as they are. My career continues to do that,” she concluded.
