Elon Musk: Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot to become world’s first ‘Von Neumann machine’
Tesla’s Optimus to build civilizations on distant planets, says Musk
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has been making headlines by claiming that Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot is on track to become the world’s first “Von Neumann machine”. The core idea behind these revelations is that a self-replicating system would be capable of building an entire civilization on distant planets in the future.
On Monday, user Ryan Dahl took to the social platform X to share his views on the SpaceX and xAI merger. “Is this how von Neumann probes start?”
In response to Dahl Musk on Tuesday, Musk shared that it was possible.
"Optimus will be the first Von Neumann machine, capable of building civilization by itself on any viable planet.”
What is a Von Neumann Machine?
A von Neumann machine- first heralded by Hungarian American Mathematician and Physicist John von Neumann- is a theoretical spacecraft that maintains efficiency by replicating itself using raw materials it would acquire from its environment. While traditionally envisioned as a spacecraft, Muska claims Optimus will be the first machine of utilizing local materials to build entire civilizations on distant planets.
How Optimus role will support Musk’s future ambitions
Musk believes Optimus will be the next big thing with the potential to outperform the entire Earth’s productivity when combined with space-based AI compute. He stated that discontinuing Tesla’s premium models-the Model S and Model X will allow the company to scale Optimus production at the Fremont factory. Ultimately, the future will reveal how these machines might build entire civilization on distant planets.
