World's biggest fish market is set to open in Sydney: First look revealed
The world's biggest-New Sydney Fish Market (NSFM)—is set to open on 19 January 2026
Australia is all set to launch the world’s biggest fish market next week.
The New South Wales NSW Government is reimagining the iconic site of seafood and the surrounding Bays Precinct to create a Sydney Fish Market for the future with world-class facilities—Sydney's most significant harborside building since the Opera House.
As reported by ABC News, the New Sydney Fish Market is set to open on 19 January 2026 and will attract global attention, with visitation expected to double to over 6 million people annually.
Designed by renowned architects 3XN, who worked with Sydney firms BVN and Aspect Studios, the facility will be a purpose-built, authentic operating fish market and a major food and dining attraction on Sydney’s inner harbor.
The design is a world-class piece of architecture, with a distinctive wave-shaped and scale-patterned roof that pays homage to the fishing industry.
The 3.6 ha Sydney Fish Market redevelopment in Blackwattle Bay is due to open soon, coinciding with the Lunar New Year.
What’s new:
Dubbed as the world’s biggest fish market, the infrastructure was designed by Danish architect 3XN along with BVN and Aspect Studios and is located adjacent to the existing Fish Market in Pyrmont.
The new Sydney Fish Market will have 6,000 sq m of public space in a four-story market hall with restaurants, fishmongers, and specialty food retailers.
A 15 km-long waterfront promenade will link the market, running from Rozelle Bay to Woolloomooloo.
The 200 m-long floating roof canopy was installed in February 2025, weighing 2,500 tonnes. Its supporting structure is formed of 594 timber roof beams, the longest of which is 32 m.
The government of New South Wales NSW hired Multiplex to build the market in November 2020.
Contracts worth A$670m were awarded to Australian suppliers for services including maritime piling, steel reinforcement and installation of the roof cassettes.
Special addition:
Sydney Fish Market is more than a fish market. It is considered Australia's Home of Seafood and the backbone of the seafood industry.
To be launched, the new fish market represents not only a state-of-the-art waterfront icon but also a $750 million injection of support into the national seafood industry.
Additionally, the building presents an invaluable opportunity for Sydney Fish Market to transform operations and deliver an expanded business model that leverages this significant investment from the NSW Government to strengthen pride in the Australian seafood industry.
