Macaulay Culkin recently got candid and revealed that he wanted to be appreciated by his parents while growing up.
Articulating his thoughts on a new episode of Mythical Kitchen, the 45-year-old American actor and musician opened up about his “fractured” relationship with his parents, especially his father, Kit Culkin, a renowned stage actor.
Macaulay shared that his parents rarely told him they were proud of him even though he craved appreciation from them. However, after becoming a father himself, he is making sure he does the opposite to his children, sons 4-year-old Dakota and 3-year-old Carson, whom he shares with his fiancée, Brenda Song.
The Home Alone star said, "There's a word that I use in my household, because it's something that I didn't really hear enough of when I was a kid. And that's 'proud.'"
"Man, I'm proud of my kids. You know, I go out there and I'll be like, 'the number one movie in America' and yada, yada, yada, stuff like that. Never got the 'P' word.' My kid, he does his recital, and the curtain opens, and he's really excited about it — he's gonna play a bug ... and as soon as the curtain opens, he freezes and he cries, and he runs off stage."
"And so I go, and I go scoop him up. And the first thing out of my mouth is, 'Man, I'm so proud of you. You were so brave to go out there like that,’” he explained.
Notably, Macaulay went on to admit that he takes pride in being able to provide for his family. “I provide for my family in that kind of way, and that I can love my family the right kind of way."
