‘My Dearest Friend’: How Rob Reiner became family to Billy Crystal
From 'All in the Family' to ‘When Harry Met Sally’, here’s everything you need to know about how Rob Reiner and Billy Crystal built a 50-year Hollywood bromance
The bromance of Billy Crystal and Rob Reiner spanned nearly five decades.
The actor-director duo collaborated over the years on several projects, including All in the Family, This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally.
But this almost 50 years of friendship came to a shocking end when the famous couple were killed in their Brentwood home.
However, what was more appalling was that the pair's youngest son, Nick Reiner, was arrested in connection with their murder.
In light of this, the slain couple’s neighbour spotted the Monster, Inc. star near the couple's home, describing to ABC 7 that he "looked like he was about to cry."
Rob and Billy's bond dated back to 1976. But given his professionalism, the late director previously shared he had second thoughts on casting the actor in When Harry Met Sally because of their friendship.
“Whenever you do something this personal, and you’re best friends, if it doesn’t work, it’s like, ‘Oy!’ ” he earlier told People.
“Finally, I said, ‘Aw, f*** it; he’s perfect!’ The biggest laugh in any film I’ve ever done was a line Billy came up with: ‘I’ll have what she’s having.'"
In the meantime, Nick did not appear in court in connection with the murder of Rob and Michele.
His lawyer, Alan Jackson, says his client was not present because he had not yet been "medically cleared.”
