OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has declared a “red code” at the company in a bid to overhaul ChatGPT and improve the quality of the chatbot, according to an internal memo.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, the decision came as Google has threatened ChatGPT’s dominance by rolling out a new version of its Gemini AI model.
In November, Gemini 3 not only exceeded OpenAI on industry benchmarks but also soared search giant’s stocks.
Given the intensity of AI battle in the tech-driven world, OpenAI has decided to improve personalization features for users, enhance its reliability and speed, and expand its searching capacity for a wider range of questions.
According to an internal memo, Altman also instructed the staffers to delay other planned initiatives, including the integration of AI-powered shopping tools, ads, and personal assistant ChatGPT Pulse.
Nick Turley, the head of ChatGPT, posted on X, “Our focus now is to keep making ChatGPT more capable, continue growing, and expand access around the world — while making it feel even more intuitive and personal.”
Since the introduction of the Gemini 3 model and image generator, Nano Banana, the user base has been increasing . According to Google, the active users grew from 450 million in July to 650 million in October.
Besides Google, OpenAI is also facing fierce competition from Anthropic, an AI model which is popular among businesses.
OpenAI is not a profitable company and it must raise funding at a near-constant pace to survive, thereby putting it at disadvantage against Google and other tech giants.
As per company’s financial projection, the ChatGPT maker should spend aggressively to grow its revenue to nearly $200 billion to turn a profit in 2030.
Despite these projections, Altman has refuted these claims regarding finances on the grounds of expanding ChatGPT’s user base of more than 800 million weekly.
