It Ends With Us was the book, the author, Colleen Hoover, was once most proud of, but that has significantly changed after the movie adaptation and the legal drama between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, which soon followed it.
The 45-year-old writer had built a strong fan following with her books, way before the adaptation was announced, and her readers were greatly excited for the movie.
However, the lawsuit that ensued now appears to be more popular than her book, which makes Hoover feel rather “embarrassed,” as she told Elle in an interview.
The Maybe Someday writer shared that she was oblivious to whatever happened on set as she rarely visited, but it is “unfortunate” and “disappointing.”
Hoover expressed that it “feels like a circus,” and has even impacted many actors’ careers, which she finds “all around sad.”
As for herself, the Verity author noted that her silence over the conflict is deliberate, even though “I have my own story I could tell … but I don’t want to bring attention to it, and I don’t want to have to put someone else down to lift myself up.
She admitted that she feels guilty towards her mother as well, who suffered domestic abuse and inspired the book. “Now it gives us PTSD to think about it. I feel awful because I almost feel like she’s gone through more with the aftermath of this film, more pain than she went through with my dad, just seeing the ugliness of it.”
The author noted that she does not find the courage to recommend the book anymore, due to the negative light it has been cast because of the legal drama.
