The Game of Thrones universe is set to expand through to 2028 as HBO finally gives a major update about House of the Dragon and the upcoming Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
During HBO’s press presentation on Thursday, November 20, in New York City, the network confirmed that House of the Dragon is officially moving ahead with season 4 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has locked in a second season. And with both titles set to release annually through 2028, the franchise is gearing up for a packed slate.
HBO didn’t label House of the Dragon’s fourth season as its last, though showrunner Ryan Condal has already said he envisioned four seasons to complete the “Dance of the Dragons“ storyline.
Meanwhile, season 3 is set to arrive next summer, promising the series’ most explosive chapter yet. As Condal previously told Entertainment Weekly, it’s “our biggest season to date,” adding that fans waiting for “horrible, brutal, pitiless bloodshed will be getting it in copious amounts.”
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s head of drama, said in a statement that the network is thrilled to roll out new seasons over the next three years, adding, “Together, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be.”
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which adapts Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, premieres January 18, 2026.
Season 2 will take on “The Sworn Sword,” following Dunk and the bald-headed Egg as they carve their unlikely path across Westeros. Showrunner Ira Parker previously teased the first season as an “inspiring underdog tale,” set decades before the last dragon dies.
