Bowen Yang sets record straight about potential ‘Wicked 3’

Bowen Yang is putting the brakes on any expectations of a third Wicked movie.

The actor, who appears in the two-part film adaptation and stars on Saturday Night Live, shared a clear and honest take when asked whether the franchise might continue beyond Wicked: For Good

For him, the story already feels complete.

“I think we leave it here,” Yang told Variety. He did, however, playfully entertain the idea of a side story, joking that he’d pitch a Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead-style project focused on his and Bronwyn James’ characters, Pfannee and ShenShen.

Wicked: For Good covers the second and final act of the Broadway musical, bringing the duology to the same stopping point as the stage version.

For now, there’s no indication that a third film is being seriously discussed.

Even director Jon M. Chu kept things vague, responding, “What’s it about? You know, there’s a lot of ideas flying around right now. … We’ll see. Let’s enjoy this ride first.”

Yang also shared how thrilled he is that his co-star Ariana Grande is returning to host Saturday Night Live in December, especially with Cher joining as the musical guest.

He called Cher his “dream host” and said, “I cannot wait. I’m so glad that we have her presence there.” He added that Ariana has a strong Cher impression and joked that he might pitch a “Cher Family Reunion” sketch for the holidays.

The New York premiere of Wicked: For Good brought out the film’s full cast, including Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Colman Domingo, Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum.

The film arrives in theaters on Friday, marking what appears to be the official end of the cinematic journey down the yellow brick road, at least for now.
