Glen Powell reveals he's back in uni after dropping out to pursue acting
The 'Top Gun: Maverick' star is pursuing a degree at the University of Texas
Glen Powell is already planning his graduation party as he returns to university after nearly two decades.
While promoting his new film The Running Man in an interview with Variety last week, the 37-year-old actor gave an update on his degree after enrolling at the University of Texas last year.
“Hey, you guys wanna come to my graduation — Spring of ‘27?” he asked his costars Josh Brolin and Lee Pace, who were clearly hearing news of Powell’s return to university for the first time.
“Are you serious?” Brolin, 57, exclaimed, asking if he’s getting an honorary degree.Powell clarified, “I’m finishing properly, I’m not doing the honorary degree.”
The Anyone But You star then explained that he’s “taking six credits a semester,” and that he’s currently “enrolled in the University of Texas RIGHT NOW” as he films and promotes his movies and TV shows.
Pace, 46, remarked, ““You are the busiest person I know.”
Powell then extended the invitation again, saying, “I’ll throw a graduation party if you guys wanna tear it up in Austin,” to which his costars responded with a resounding, “Absolutely!”
The Top Gun: Maverick actor first revealed he’s going back to college in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter back in May 2024, telling the outlet that he’s moving back to Austin to finish his degree.
He previously attended the same university to study their Radio-Television-Film program in 2007, but dropped out a year later to pursue his acting career.
Now, he’s finally back in the classrooms — virtually. Powell told IndieWire in July 2024 that he is “not going to be sitting in a class with other students on the regular.” Instead, he will attend classes via Zoom and take exams in person.
