Indian captain Gill out of Kolkata Test with neck injury
"He will continue to be monitored by medical team," says BCC in a statement
KOLKATA: India captain Shubman Gill will not take any further part in the ongoing opening Test against South Africa after he was forced to retire hurt with a neck injury in the first innings, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) said on Sunday.
Gill hit a four before walking off the field, rubbing his neck and did not bat again as India posted 189 in reply to South Africa's first innings total of 159.
He was subsequently taken to a hospital and was under observation, the BCCI said.
"He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team," the BCCI said, without clarifying if Gill would be fit to play the second Test in Guwahati beginning on November 22.
Ravindra Jadeja's four-wicket burst has set India on course for a victory inside three days after a frenetic 15-wicket day in the low-scoring opening Test against South Africa on Saturday.
India were in the box seat after bundling out South Africa for 159 at Eden Gardens where inconsistent bounce has been a bane for the shot-makers from both sides.
It was evident in India's reply too as they managed 189 to be left with a lead well short of their own expectations.
South Africa finished day two on 93 for seven- only 63 runs ahead with three wickets in hand.
Skipper Temba Bavuma led their fightback with 29 not out and with Corbin Bosch on one at the other end.
Jadeja came to haunt South Africa with the ball after the Proteas came out to bat for the second time in the match.
After Kuldeep Yadav got rid of Ryan Rickelton for 11, South Africa's frontline batters surrendered to Jadeja's (4-29) relentless left-arm spin.
"We need to obviously try and get as many as we can and get past 100," Harmer told reporters.
"If we can get to 150, that would be incredible but it's obviously quite difficult."
