Hilary Duff opens up about 'heavy' experience that inspired new song
Hilary Duff reveals the inspiration behind writing 'Mature' with Matthew Koma
Hilary Duff marked her return to music with the song, Mature, but it wasn’t originally rooted in a positive experience.
The 38-year-old songstress and actress revealed that it was inspired by a “brief” but difficult experience in her life with an ex-partner.
The Lizzy McGuire star noted that it was “a long, long time ago,” but “It is not totally autobiographical. I took a few artistic liberties just to make the song work structurally, but the gist is the gist,” in a new interview with Vogue.
Duff continued, “I was looking back on this relationship and thinking about whether this guy had a habit of dating younger women or whether I was ‘special.’ The whole experience was super therapeutic to write about, but being so vulnerable through your music can be really scary.”
The Metamorphosis hitmaker wrote the song with her husband, Matthew Koma, and songwriter Madison Love, and she recalled that “Part of it was an idea that Matt originated, and part of it came from thinking about that idea of not recognizing younger versions of yourself when you’re now deep into your 30s.”
The record signifies a full-circle moment for Duff, as it speaks volumes about ultimately making peace with your choices.
