SZA shrugs off 'strange' Nicki Minaj feud: 'Don't know where it came from'
The 'All the Stars' hitmaker notes there was 'no backstory' to her and Nicki's feud over the summer
SZA is setting the record straight about her unexpected feud with Nicki Minaj, insisting she’s just as confused as everyone else.
Speaking to GQ in a new cover interview published November 6, the Grammy-winning singer (born Solána Imani Rowe) addressed their viral social media clash from earlier this year, making it clear she never had any issue with the rapper known fondly as the queen of rap.
“I don’t know her. We have no connection to each other,” SZA said. “Like, there was no through line narrative. It was just like, ‘Roc Nation’... I don’t know where it came from.”
Their public spat began in July after Minaj, 42, accused SZA, 35, of subtweeting her over a post involving SZA’s former manager, Terrence “Punch” Henderson.
Things quickly escalated, with Minaj mocking SZA’s looks and later criticising her re-release of SOS as the deluxe version Lana. “B***h put out a whole new album as a deluxe… I thought she was like a real artist? Girl bye,” Minaj wrote on X.
SZA, meanwhile, tried to de-escalate. “It was a little strange,” she told GQ. “It was very like, ‘Why?’ But also, you know ‘I guess.’”
At the time, the All the Stars hitmaker tweeted, “I don’t give a f*** bout none of that weird s**t you popping… Lmao lemme go back to being calm shy and meek.”
She later reminded fans that Minaj once asked her for a feature, sharing a 2020 text exchange and writing, “You absolutely know my music and what I contribute cause you’ve asked for features twice.”
While neither star has re-engaged since, their feud remains one of the year’s most unexpected pop culture clashes. Even Cardi B, who has feuded with Minaj herself, chimed in to say, “Girl STFUUU done beefed with every black woman in the industry like girl who tf beefs with SZA?”
