Demi Lovato shares real reason behind going public with rehab journey
American singer-songwriter reveals why she decided to speak up publicly about her time in rehab
Demi Lovato has recently explained her decision to go public about her rehab journey.
The Heart Attack singer shared real reason behind going public with her time in rehab during an appearance on the latest episode of Las Culturistas on October 22.
“I had a decision that had to be made when I had gone to treatment for the first time,” said the 33-year-old.
Demi continued, “I had this very public outburst when I was 18 and which I talk about in some of my documentaries, but God, there's so many.”
Interestingly, the Let It Go crooner pointed out that her manager at the time asked her if she wanted to go public with rehab issue or just wanted to “sweep it under the rug”.
“But I was like, ‘I didn't have a role model at 13 that was speaking up about eating disorders and I need to be that role model for someone else,” mentioned Demi.
American songstress believed that it was the “responsibility” that she wanted to take on because she never had anyone at the time of her growing up to look up to.
The Camp Rock star, however, further said that there were a few actresses who did raise their voice on similar issues but there were none she could related at the age of 13.
“Especially at the time when the beauty standards were very dangerous. And so, I wanted to be that for other people,” she continued.
That’s why, Demi added, “I've been open about all of my struggles as in that moment when I made that decision, it set the tone for the rest of my life of like, you know, I wanna help people.”
“And the best way that I know how is sharing my personal experience with them,” she concluded.
