Jon M. Chu talks about comparing ‘Wicked’ with ‘The Lord of Rings’
‘Wicked’ director shares more than five-year experience of working on hit film
Jon M. Chu felt heavy hearted on Wicked wrap up as he recalled his time on set while making the film.
Ahead of its sequel, Wicked: For Good, premiere Chu reflected on the scope of the whole preject.
During Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, the Crazy Rich Asians director referred to whole franchise as "one movie."
"When I was thinking of every arc, we were thinking of it as one giant chunk," he said.
His statement seemingly brought an end to the debate that have been a topic of discussion among for a while now.
Since the release of Lord of the Rings book, fans have debated whether those films should be considered three separate movies or one singular cinematic work.
Peter Jackson himself has described the trilogy as one story told across three films, shot simultaneously over a single production period.
Similarly, now Chu finds himself in same territory, having crafted an epic musical in two parts that he views as inseparable halves of a whole.
Elsewhere during the interview, Chu looked back on the day the cast and crew said their goodbye, saying, "Everyone was very emotional, and I couldn’t feel it yet. was like, ‘No, I’ll see you next week.’ But I think the office is empty now, which is really sad."
"When you live with something for five-plus years, and you dream about it and you wake up with nightmares right in front of you, it sticks with you," he said, half-joking. "I have not processed it yet."
Wicked: For Good is slated for release on November 21.
