MTV has pulled the plug on Catfish, and host Nev Schulman has apologised to fans who kept the show alive for more than a decade.
The reality series, which first hit screens in 2012, became a cultural talking point for its investigations into online relationships and hidden identities.
After nine seasons and over 300 episodes, the network confirmed the show would not return.
In a video shared on Instagram, Nev broke the news himself. “After 12 years, 300 episodes and just a lot of traveling around this incredible country, Catfish has officially been cancelled. Sorry,” he said.
Former co-host Max Joseph, who stepped away from the show in 2018, also addressed the cancelation.
He suggested the series might only be “on pause” if another outlet decided to continue it.
However, Max praised Nev’s longevity in cable television, calling it rare in today’s landscape, and thanked fans for making the series feel like a family tradition.
Nev ended his message by thanking those who appeared on the show and trusted it with their stories.
He said viewers turned a documentary idea into “a global conversation about curiosity, and compassion,” and he credited both Max and Kamie Crawford, who joined as co-host in 2018, for shaping its legacy.
With its run now over, Catfish closed as one of MTV’s longest standing unscripted hits, leaving fans wondering if it could still find a second life elsewhere.
