Cillian Murphy shared rare insight about his upcoming role as Steve, in an intense drama of the same.

Murphy is starring as the headteacher of a struggling reform school for boys in mid-1990s England.

The film is an adaptation of Max Porter’s 2023 novella Shy, adapted by the writer himself and directed by Tim Mielants.

Its logline reads, "Faced with ever-increasing pressures, the head of a crumbling reform school for boys navigates a pivotal, fraught day while clinging to a fading sense of hope."

During its premiere at the TIFF, Murphy and film’s cast sat down for a conversation with the Deadline.

When asked about his perspective about Steve’s personality, the Oppenheimer star said. "[Steve] is one of those people who is doing his absolute best, but he is carrying an awful lot of weight, psychologically and emotionally."

He continued saying that, Steve is "Someone who is trying to fix people or help people fix themselves, but he has not looked at himself."

Elsewhere, during his appearance at the red carpet the Oscar winner revealed that since his parents also were school teachers and used to spend half of the day with "35 teenagers every day" and then come back home to their own teenage kids. He acknowledged their job as emotionally consuming saying, "I have a huge respect for that job."

Following its premiere at TIFF on September 9, it will now be released globally on Netflix on October 3.
