Charlie Kirk shot dead during Utah Valley University event

Conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was fatally shot on Wednesday, September 10, while speaking to students at Utah Valley University. He is in critical condition, according to police.

The 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA was hosting his “American Comeback Tour” when a gunshot rang out, striking him in the neck. Students described a chaotic scene as people screamed, dropped to the ground, and scrambled for safety.

Police say the shot came from a nearby building. A man has been taken into custody, though his identity and motive have not yet been released. Federal agents from the FBI and ATF are assisting local authorities.

Kirk was rushed to a hospital. Classes at Utah Valley were canceled and the campus was closed for the rest of the day.

Reaction was swift. Donald Trump urged supporters to “pray for Charlie” on Truth Social. Vice President J.D. Vance called him “a genuinely good guy and young father.” Democrats including Rep. Ro Khanna and Gov. Gavin Newsom also condemned the shooting, with Newsom calling it “disgusting, vile and reprehensible.”

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox pledged accountability, while Sen. Mike Lee said his prayers were with Kirk and the students who witnessed the violence.

Charlie Kirk was pronounced dead shortly after the incident. President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have expressed their deepest sorrow over the tragic killing of conservative political commentator.

The investigation is ongoing.
