Paul Mescal has established a process for himself which determines the characters he ends up playing in the projects he’s offered.

The 29-year-old actor attended the premiere of his movie, The History of Sound, in New York City, on Tuesday, September 2nd, where he was asked what draws him to his character in the upcoming release.

The Normal People star said, “I think I'm drawn to characters regardless of their sexuality. I think, like, I'm learning more and more as I kind of do this job that, unless I have something to say about who these people are, unless I fundamentally know or have a distinct opinion about them, I won't do it.”

Continuing, he added of his character in the movie, “I love Lionel. He's the longest I've lived with any character. I've waited five years to get to play him, and I'm so grateful that I did. I think he's an extraordinary man,” in conversation with People Magazine.

Since the BAFTA winning actor was paired up with his friend Josh O’Connor in the movie, he went on to share that working with his pal made the experience even more memorable.

“We entered the filming process knowing each other very well, and then at the end of it, it just was the perfect junction that we entered it at because we had so much room to go when we started filming [and we] really got incredibly close afterwards,” said Mescal.
