Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to With the 8th Pick, a spec script that tells the story of Kobe Bryant's dramatic journey to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1996 NBA draft.

Written by Alex Sohn and Gavin Johannsen, the film explores the high-stakes process that led to Bryant's selection by the Charlotte Hornets with the 13th pick, followed by a trade to the Lakers.

The script focuses on the New Jersey Nets, who held the eighth pick in the 1996 draft and considered selecting Bryant.

General Manager John Nash and newly appointed coach John Calipari were keen on drafting Bryant, but the team's financial struggles and Bryant's preference for the Lakers complicated the process.

The film is expected to have a thrilling tone, similar to Moneyball and Air, with a blend of sports drama and business intrigue.

The project is being produced by Tim and Trevor White from Star Thrower Entertainment, along with Ryan Stowell and Gotham Chopra of Religion of Sports.

Chopra previously directed the acclaimed documentary Kobe Bryant's Muse

While a director has not been attached yet, the film is expected to attract significant attention due to its unique storyline and the legacy of Kobe Bryant.

Bryant's impact on the Lakers and the NBA is undeniable. With five NBA championships, numerous accolades, and a lasting influence on the sport, his story continues to inspire new generations of fans.

Tragically, Bryant passed away in a helicopter crash in 2020 at the age of 41, along with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna. Their legacy lives on through this film project and the countless memories they left on the court.
