'Bridgerton’ producer reveals real story behind show’s success
Shonda Rhimes addresses ongoing speculation in recent conversation
Bridgerton’s producer Shonda Rhimes recently set the internet abuzz after reflecting on her 2020 series.
The 55-year-old addressed the ongoing speculation, describing the Netflix show as a “workplace drama.”
During her appearance at the Edinburgh TV festival, Shonda explained, “I didn’t see it as a romance. It was more of a workplace drama. The women don’t have power in other areas of their lives, the power is in how they marry, so it becomes a workplace. And that’s where the drama is. More importantly, I could see myself in them. If a black woman in 21st century America can see herself in regency England, it’s a good story.”
Later in the conversation, Shonda expressed surprise at the romantic show’s popularity.
Speaking exclusively, she added, “It wasn't just a global show. It became a lifestyle brand. People got Bridgerton tea sets, there were Bridgerton proms and weddings.”
It is pertinent to mention that the series is based on Julia Quinn’s book collection of the same title.
For the unversed, Bridgerton’s fourth season has been confirmed to premiere on Netflix in 2026.
