Radioactive water leaks into sea from UK nuclear bomb base

Royal Naval Armaments Depot, RNAD Coulport, a British marine base has released nuclear waste into Loch Long, a fjord-like sea near Glasgow, Scotland.

The British navy force failed to repair old water pipes and was unable to maintain 1500 water pipes networks on site and allowed leak of radioactive water into the sea water from the UK bomb base.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) suggests that up to half of the nuclear particles at the unit area reached their intended life span when the spill happened.

SEPA blamed the lack of upkeep as the cause of floods at Coulport which resulted in avoidable nuclear waste release and it had radioactive isotopes of hydrogen, Tritium, which has a half-life of 12.3 years.

“The UK government insisted the files had to be kept secret for national security reasons, but in June 2025, Scottish information commissioner, David Hamilton ruled that most had to be released,” The Guardian reported.

Hamilton publicized it as per Scottish freedom of information law which ended a 6 years Right to Information (RTI) struggle of English journalists and added: “Files disclosure threatened reputations not national security”

The report mentions a lot of nuclear mishaps from very first in 2010 and then from 2019 two incidents were reported while in 2013 and 2014 Coulport and Faslane faced such issues around 105 times and out of these, 6 were related to nuclear weapons.
