'My Best Friend's Wedding' sequel to be penned by Celine Song
'Materialists' filmmaker Celine Song to helm 'My Best Friend's Wedding' sequel, with a script in works
Celine Song has been tapped to write the sequel to My Best Friend’s Wedding.
The revival of the beloved 1997 rom-com starring Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney is still in the early stages of development, with The Materialists filmmaker attached solely as the screenwriter and not the director.
The original film followed best friends Julianne (Roberts) and Michael (Mulroney), who decided to marry each other if they were still single at 28.
However, when Michael introduces Julianne to his fiancée (Cameron Diaz) just days before her 28th birthday, Julianne realises she loves her best friend.
She sets out to stop the wedding. With only four days to sabotage it, things don’t go the way she expects.
The film was a major box office success, earning $127 million domestically, about $256 million today when adjusted for inflation.
It is pertinent to note that the sequel will not mark a genre departure for Song.
She previously elevated romantic drama Past Lives, as both writer and director, earning her Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director.
Her latest film, The Materialists, a romantic satire starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, has been a sleeper hit this year, grossing $52.1 million globally.
