Julia Garner has shed some light on her audition process for the long-delayed Madonna biopic.
In a recent interview on the SmartLess podcast, Garner revealed that she auditioned for the role by dancing and singing in front of the Queen of Pop herself.
The Ozark star said she "grew up listening" to the singer's music and was excited to audition for the biopic. "It just came about," she explained. "I knew they were doing a project, making a movie about it, and then I went out to audition. I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it, because I wasn’t a trained dancer, and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing. And sing with her!"
Garner, a self-proclaimed fan of Madonna's, revealed that she kept telling herself "OK, what would Madonna do?" during the audition process.
"Which is convince you that she deserves, you know, to be in this room, and I owned it. I was kind of like, 'You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then that’s on you.'" This confident approach seemed to serve her well in the audition.
The Madonna biopic has been in development for several years, but its status has been uncertain. Universal Pictures shelved the project in 2023, but Madonna recently shared on Instagram that she was working on the script again.
The actress reiterated that the movie is still in the works, saying, "Yeah, I mean, that’s supposed to still happen." She added, "But I also feel like anything that’s great … takes a long time" to be completed.
