Brendan Fraser reveals why Tom Cruise’s ‘The Mummy’ didn’t work out
Tom Cruise starred as Sergeant Nick Moron in 2017’s horror flick ‘The Mummy’
Brendan Fraser dished on why Tom Cruise's The Mummy reboot was a box office flop in comparison to his fan-favourite trilogy.
Fraser played Rick O'Connell who battles ancient curses and resurrected mummies while protecting Egypt from supernatural threats.
During an appearance at the Fan Expo Denver, in conversation with the Collider, he offered a reason for why Cruise’s film was a failure.
"I really don’t know. I know Tom Cruise tried to make his movie and it ain't easy! We all know how hard this movie is to make," he said as he reunited with his co-stars John Hannah, Patricia Velasquez and Oded Fehr.
"With the exception of three [The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor], the thing with all of these films is that, at least it was fun, it was a thrill ride, and you wanted to do it again."
He continued, "The answer is you've just got to give everybody what they really, really want. If you stray from that path."
The original franchise began in 1999 The Mummy also starring John Hannah and Rachel Weisz, it was followed by 2001's The Mummy Returns, starring Dwayne Johnson joining the cast, and 2008's The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
While Fraser played adventurer and former solider O'Connell, Cruise portrayed the role of a U.S. Army Sergeant Nick Morton, who accidentally disturbs the ancient tomb of a mummy princess (Sofia Boutella). Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, and Russell Crowe were also among the cast.
