Netflix has unexpectedly canceled two of its star-studded series, Pulse and The Residence, after just one season, highlighting the streamer's strict renewal criteria despite solid early performance.

Pulse, a Miami-based medical drama starring Willa Fitzgerald and Colin Woodell, premiered on April 3, 2025, but never gained sustained traction.

Viewership dropped sharply after its debut week, and the show struggled to stand out among several competing hospital dramas. Although detailed figures weren’t shared, insiders noted its early season numbers failed to justify renewal.

Meanwhile, The Residence, a White House murder-mystery from Shondaland featuring Uzo Aduba, Giancarlo Esposito, and Randall Park, also ended after only eight episodes.

The critically praised series, which was filmed on a replica of the White House, even reached No. 2 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 with 8.8 million views.

But Netflix cited high production costs, ill-timed release, and a rapidly shifting streaming landscape as key factors in its decision.

As per reports by The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, Pulse was overshadowed by more successful medical dramas and review feedback described its narratives as "domineering" and shallow .

The Residence faced stiff competition from the breakout hit Adolescence, which dominated social media and the Top 10 chart. Despite Netflix exploring a scaled-down Season 2 for The Residence, talks ultimately broke down.

These cancellations reveal the high-stakes world of streaming, where even well-received shows with A-list talent and high production value are not immune to being cut.
