Adrian Grenier won’t be stepping back into the kitchen for the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. The 48-year-old actor, who played Nate Cooper, Andy Sachs’ college sweetheart turned sous-chef, in the original 2006 film, will not be returning for the highly anticipated follow-up, according to Entertainment Weekly.

This news comes just as 20th Century Studios officially confirmed that production on The Devil Wears Prada 2 has begun.

Fans can expect the return of some of the most beloved characters, as Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci are all set to reprise their roles.

David Frankel will once again direct, and Aline Brosh McKenna is back on board as writer. Kenneth Branagh is also reportedly joining the cast, although details on his character have yet to be revealed.

The original film, adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s novel based on her time as an assistant to former Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, followed Hathaway’s character, Andy, as she stepped into the demanding world of high fashion under the icy watch of Miranda Priestly, played by Streep.

Nate, her boyfriend, was often seen criticizing Andy’s career choices and calling out her growing ambition, behavior that has led fans to judge his role in the story over the years.

In fact, Grenier himself acknowledged the backlash in a 2021 oral history reunion with Entertainment Weekly, where he admitted he now understands why so many viewers saw Nate as the real antagonist of the story.

"All those memes that came out were shocking to me. It hadn't occurred to me until I started to really think about it, and perhaps it was because I was as immature as Nate was at the time, and in many ways he's very selfish and self-involved, it was all about him, he wasn't extending himself to support Andy in her career," he said.

He added, "At the end of the day, it's just a birthday, right? It's not the end of the world. I might've been as immature as him at the time, so I personally couldn't see his shortcomings. But after time to reflect and much deliberation, I've come to realize the truth in that perspective."
