'Squid Game' season 3 drops bombshell cameo

The highly anticipated third season of Netflix's dystopian thriller Squid Game has finally arrived, and it's packed with surprises. 

In the series finale, a shocking cameo appearance by two-time Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett sets the stage for a potential US spin-off.

The final episode of Season 3 jumps to Los Angeles, California, where Blanchett plays a character recruiting potential American players to join the deadly game. 

Her role is similar to Gong Yoo's character, "The Recruiter," in earlier seasons. This unexpected twist confirms long-standing rumours about a possible US remake or spin-off of the Korean series.

According to reports, the US spin-off, tentatively titled Squid Game: America, will be a series and not a direct remake. 

Dennis Kelly, known for Utopia, is reportedly attached to write the series, which is set to begin production in Los Angeles in December 2025. Master Key Studios will produce the LA unit, with Zeus Zamani and Rhett Giles as producers.

Rumours suggest that David Fincher, known for his work on Netflix series like Mindhunter, will direct the US spin-off. 

Blanchett's appearance in the season 3 finale has generated significant buzz, with many speculating about her potential involvement in future Squid Game projects. 

However, it's unclear if her cameo means she's been officially cast in a US spin-off. Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk kept her appearance a secret for a long time, and Lee Byung-hun, who plays The Front Man, revealed that he never met Blanchett during filming.

With the door now open for a US spin-off, fans are eagerly awaiting more information about the project's direction, cast, and potential storyline.
