'Squid Games' creator finally discloses hidden meaning behind 'shapes'

Hwang Dong-hyuk, creator of the Netflix series Squid Game, has revealed the secret meaning behind the shapes on the guard costumes.

The suits of the masked guards carry has three shapes; circle, triangle and square in the crime thriller series.

Huyk opened that it was something that came to his mind when he conceived the idea of the show.

“I was quite literally thinking of myself as a kid… and the circle, triangle, square is exactly what you [draw] on the ground”, he said.

According to the 51-year-old Korean filmmaker, the shapes represent the “limitless competition in late capitalism.”

He explained in a press conference attended by Dexerto, “It’s used in our show to show the different classes among the master guards.”

“I just think that these simple and fundamental geometric shapes… came to symbolize our show, as well as some of the issues that we face in current society.

The executive producer believes “it was quite a peculiar discovery” that he had made, and he is very fond of it.

Squid Game season 3 is set to release on Netflix on June 27, 2025.
