James Gunn opens up about inspiration behind Krypto dog

James Gunn revealed the inspiration behind creating Superman’s hero dog Krypto in the upcoming film.

On National Bring Your Dog to Work day, the writer/director celebrated the event by sharing how his rescue pup Ozu inspired his most recent work.

In a conversation with the People Magazine, Gunn said, "When I first adopted Ozu, I was starting to write the Superman script. Ozu was such a terrible, uncontrollable dog, tearing up our entire house."

He added, "I thought, 'What if he had superpowers? We'd be screwed.' And thus, the filmic Krypto was born. He really just gave the script that unusual aspect that made it fun to write."

His muse wasn’t just limited to the script, the dog also served as the visual inspiration for Krypto.

Gunn explained, "We'd captured Ozu's body and used it as the model for Krypto, just changing the colour of his fur."

He continued, "We also used the hundreds of video references for the way Ozu played and fought and bit my feet for Krypto's onscreen actions."

The Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker also shared that his rescue dog gave a bark of approval to Krypto’s final look.

The new Superman film is slated for premiere on July 11.
