David Harbour on gradual dislike for ‘Stranger Things’ due to repetitive narrative
David Harbour reflected on challenges of keeping Stanger Things fresh for over a decade.
Harbour played Jim Hopper, fiercely protective chief of the Hawkins Police Department and who adopts Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) as his daughter.
In a sit down with his Black Widow co-star Scarlet Johansson for the Interview Magazine, A Working Man star revealed that he is ready to take on new challenges after wrapping up the popular sci-fi series.
"When I started I loved it so much," Harbour said. "Buddies of mine who'd done TV shows for many years said, 'By season three or four you’ll be running.' And I 'was like, ‘Never! I love all these guys so much.'"
However, over time, Harbour admitted he began to feel the fatigued by the repetitive elements of the series, questioning, "'How much more story is there?' You're having to play a lot of the same beat."
Harbour further said that despite the challenges he was ready to take the "risk" and do something that people haven't seen him do before. "So yeah, after 10 years, it’s like, 'Okay,'" he said.
This is not the first time he has admitted to struggling with Stranger Things. Previously, he told the Insider that he was planning to shift exclusively to movies following the end of Netflix’s hit.
True to his words, Harbour returned to the big screen this summer as Marvel's Red Guardian in Thunderbolts, a role he is set to play again in Avengers: Doomsday. He’s also filming a sequel to his Christmas action movie Violent Night.
Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is set to release in three parts, November 26, December 25, and December 31, 2025, respectively.
