Mason Thames opened up about how he landed on the role of Hiccup Haddock from How to Train Your Dragon.
Directed by Dean DeBlois, the upcoming live action adaptation is based on 15-year-old Viking who defies his centuries-old family tradition of hunting dragon and instead befriends one.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Incoming actor revealed how his breakout role in The Black Phone paved the way for him to play Hiccup.
"Apparently, they had been through a bunch of Hiccups. So Dean told me he watched The Black Phone on a plane, and then he was like, ‘Why is this kid not auditioning for Hiccup? Let’s get him in the room," he told the outlet.
The 17-year-old star described receiving the role as "destiny" and how "a little coincidence like that changed my life."
Thames also recalled his 7-year-old self, who dreamed of becoming the dragon rider Viking.
"I was like, 'I want to be that guy.' I related to Hiccup so much," he said. "God, I never thought that I’d be given the chance to step into his shoes and maybe affect kids the way Hiccup affected me [as a kid]. It’s such an honour."
How to Train Your Dragon is slated for release on June 13. Meanwhile The Black Phone 2 is set to premiere on October 17.
