Robert Eggers to bring 'A Christmas Carol' to life with Willem Dafoe as Scrooge
Acclaimed director Robert Eggers is set to write and direct a new adaptation of Charles Dickens' timeless classic 'A Christmas Carol' for Warner Bros. Pictures.
Eggers will produce the project alongside Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus for Maiden Voyage.
According to Deadline, Eggers has crafted the role of Ebenezer Scrooge with his longtime collaborator Willem Dafoe in mind, who has become a muse for the director after appearing in his last three features: The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu.
A Christmas Carol, first published in 1843, tells the story of miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited by the ghost of his late business partner Jacob Marley and three spirits on Christmas Eve, forcing him to confront his own existence.
Eggers' adaptation promises to bring a fresh perspective to this beloved tale.
Before diving into A Christmas Carol, Eggers is set to shoot his werewolf horror movie Werwulf this fall, which Focus Features has scheduled for theatrical release on Christmas Day 2026.
Nosferatu, Eggers' remake of the 1922 silent classic, was released in December and surpassed $180 million at the global box office.
Eggers' notable works include The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu, showcasing his affinity for dark, atmospheric storytelling.
In a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Eggers mentioned his aversion to filming modern settings, saying, “The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill.”
