Jay Ellis gives shout out to Monica Barbaro for role in his proposal

Jay Ellis looked back on how he figured out the best way to propose his wife Nina Senicar.

Ellis, who plays Lt. Reuben 'Payback' Fitch in Top Gun revealed how his co-stars Monica Barbaro and Miles Teller helped him in planning the best proposal.

The Insecure actor was set to ask for the hand in marriage to Senicar during his trip in Bali in 2019, however, the love birds ended up suffering from unexpected "Bali Belly" (diarrhoea).

When they finally recovered he explained that the next best option was to take Senicar scuba diving and propose underwater. 

On pitching this idea to his action film castmates, Barbaro dismissed the notion calling it out as "the stupidest idea I’ve ever heard."

"The first thing people wanna do when they get engaged is kiss! You’re gonna be underwater, what are you gonna do, [bubbling noises]?' Shout out to Monica, she was right," he said.

Few days later, Teller told him about a beach in Uluwatu. Describing the memorable moment, Ellis recalled, "We’re on this beach and we’re watching the sun go down and I am just panicking and I’m freaking out."

"She turns and she looks away to look at the sunset and as she looks, I reach in my bag and I pull it out," he added.

Ellis continued, “And [Senicar] turns around and I say, ‘Can we do this again? Will you marry me?’ And that was it!"

The couple, who share two children together, later tied the knot in a dreamy ceremony in Tuscany, Italy, in 2022 with several of Ellis’ Top Gun co-stars in attendance, including Glen Powell and Danny Ramirez.
