Mark Hamill makes shocking confession about 'Star Wars' films
Mark Hamill famously portrayed Luke Skywalker in the hit 'Star Wars' film series starting 1977
Mark Hamill hasn’t revisited the galaxy far, far away in nearly five decades.
During an appearance on the 3rd Hour of Today on Friday, June 6, the 73-year-old actor revealed that he hasn’t watched Star Wars: A New Hope since its 1977 premiere.
“I haven't seen it since it came out,” said Hamill. “My sons watch it — especially Nathan is a huge aficionado. I saw it when it came out and I just don't revisit it.”
And he's not nostalgic about his own work either. “I'm not one of those people that goes, 'Hey, let's watch one of my movies!'” he joked.
While the franchise is often pegged as sci-fi, Hamill has always seen it differently.
“One of the things that struck me when I first read [the screenplay] was, ‘This isn't science fiction — it's a fairytale,’” he explained. “There's a princess, there's a wizard, there's a space pirate.”
He even compared it to The Wizard of Oz, saying it was similar “if you did a gender switch and made Dorothy Luke.”
Hamill also looked back at filming Return of the Jedi, recalling a time he pushed George Lucas for more character depth. “I said, ‘Luke has lost his hand… shouldn’t it be about him struggling with the dark side?’ And George said, ‘Mark, it’s for children.’”
