Danny DeVito's 'Batman Returns' confessions: 'I got all flushed'
Danny DeVito opens up about lusting after Michelle Pfeiffer on 'Batman Returns' set
Danny DeVito is getting candid about his former costar Michelle Pfeiffer, admitting that he "lusted" after her during the filming of Batman Returns.
In a conversation with Colin Farrell for Variety's Actors on Actors series, DeVito shared his admiration for Pfeiffer, saying, "She was a goddess."
DeVito, who played the villainous Penguin, revealed that he would get excited when Pfeiffer was in a scene, joking that he'd even ask for extra makeup.
Farrell quipped, "Did you brush your teeth that morning?" DeVito responded, "I got all flushed... Put extra makeup on — 'Give me another pound of makeup.' It was very difficult."
The actor later clarified that it was his character, Oswald Cobblepot, who was doing the lusting, saying, "I kind of feel like she liked it. She liked Oswald." In the film, Catwoman rejects the Penguin's advances, but DeVito wrote a short story featuring the two characters romantically involved for DC Comics' Gotham City Villains.
Farrell, who played the Penguin in HBO's The Penguin, asked DeVito if he'd reprise the role. "Absolutely," DeVito replied, citing his love for the operatic elements of Batman Returns. "The Shakespeare of it — 'All the world's a stage.' Oswald's realm and his penguins and his minions and his passion. I loved that."
DeVito added, "As long as I could get Catwoman to visit me every once in a while: Be still my beating Penguin heart."
