Jackie Chan reveals valuable stunt tip he shared with co-star Ben Wang
Ben Wang opens up about tough training compared to Jackie Chan’s veteran skills
Jackie Chan, the veteran Hong Kong actor, returned to silver screen reprising his memorable role as Mr Han in the Karate Kid: Legends.
The story follows Han as he mentors his nephew, Li (Ben Wang), who moves from China to New York City. After clashing with a school bully, Li enters the Five Borough Tournament. Han then travels to New York to train him in martial arts, while Danny LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) arrives from California to teach him karate.
According to Variety, the Rush Hour actor, who has been acting since 1960 and is widely known for his fighting choreography, revealed a valuable advice he passed on to Wang regarding the stunt performances.
"I said 'Ben, we do have a double for you, but you should do your own thing," Chan revealed to the outlet. "The audience respects you more. When you use a double, you become lazy.'"
The Drunken Master star also noted that, with 64 years of experience, he didn’t need any training for the new film and while he takes pride in performing his own stunts, he also acknowledged that age has slowed him down.
"I’m not like I used to be when I was 20, and could do a triple kick in the sky," he quipped. "Now I do one kick but it’s still me."
In contrast, the 25-year-old Wang had a tough training session. "I got a systematic a**-kicking," he admitted.
Revealing his gruelling schedule, Wang shared, "It was five days of formal training, from morning to night, and I trained by myself on the weekend."
He added that the team had just 90 days to get him into fighting shape for his scenes with Chan.
The Karate Kid: Legends was released on May 30.
